Beth Overturf to continue softball career at IHCC

OTTUMWA — Beth Overturf became the sixth senior on this summer’s talent-packed Ottumwa softball team who will extend her playing career beyond high school Tuesday when she signed a letter of intent to play for Jim Overturf’s Indian Hills Community College softball team.

“I think Beth is a very nice softball player and I think her catching ability is very strong, even though we are looking at her for maybe a secondary position, too,” coach Overturf said.

Beth Overturf’s mom Dana and dad Doug, along with coach Overturf and legendary Ottumwa coach Frank Huston, all attended the signing, which took place on the basketball court inside the Hellyer Student Life Center.

Overturf, the starting catcher on last season’s uber-talented softball team, will be joined on the Warriors by teammate Mandi Moore.

“I think Beth is a very nice softball player and I think her catching ability is very strong, even though we are looking at her for maybe a secondary position, too,” coach Overturf said.

The acquisitions of Moore and Overturf  should be especially beneficial for the Warriors because Overturf caught Moore in the overwhelming majority of last year’s games and is likely to catch her in most of her outings this season.

“Having both the pitcher and catcher from Ottumwa is kind of a nice combination because they know each other,” coach Overturf said.

“Beth is a very, very solid and saavy catcher,” he said, “She has a lot of high-level experience.”

Overturf cites a couple of reasons IHCC is a good fit for her.

“I think it’s a good place to start off because I get to stay in my hometown,” she said, “and it will give me the gist of what I want to do after my first two years of college.”

Overturf boasts a career batting average of .300 and will start for the Bulldogs for her fourth straight season. She received CIML Metro honorable mention status last season. Overturf also had a laudable volleyball career, as the Bulldog setter was selected CIML Metro second team all-conference her junior and senior season.

The rest of the Bulldogs who will go on to play college ball are second baseman Olivia Roark, Missouri State, a division 1 school; outfielders Katie Sammons and Sammy Garrett, Upper Iowa University; and pitcher Brittni Vogt, Southwestern Community College.
