KEOTA — The Cardinal baseball team rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Pekin 7-5 in the District 9, Class 1A semfinals Thursday in a game that took eight innings to complete.

The Comets trailed 5-2 after Pekin strung together four runs in the bottom of the fourth. But, once Brennon Elder was tapped to relieve starting Cardinal pitcher Conner McElderry in the middle of the fourth, the Panthers' offensive momentum came to a screeching halt. Cardinal scored a run in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh before bringing the winning two runs across home plate in the eighth.

The Comets' two-run seventh was ornamented by two consecutive doubles by Cody Streeby and McElderry and an RBI single by Charlie Rachford. Streeby had a monster game at the plate, going 4-5.

Cardinal will play North Mahaska at 7 p.m. Saturday in Montezuma in the district finals.
