Ottumwa's perfect record spoiled by Indianola

INDIANOLA – The top-ranked Ottumwa softball team's perfect season was spoiled by a solid Indianola team Monday, as the Bulldogs were swept by the Indians 7-2 and 11-10.

The sobering losses were partly induced by the a pair of solid offensive performances by Indianola, which won the Class 4A state championship last season. Ottumwa's only two runs in game one came off solo home runs by Alexis Winn and Beth Overturf. Olivia Roark, who returned to action after a thumb injury she suffered against Des Moines Lincoln had rendered her to the sideline her for a couple of games, went 2-4 at the plate.

"She came back strong," Ottumwa coach Frank Huston said about Roark.

Mandi Moore took the loss on the mound in both games, her first two losses of the season; although she only pitched two-thirds of an inning in game two. Moore allowed seven runs on 13 hits while striking out seven in six innings of work in game one.

Brittni Vogt started the game on the mound in the bottom half of the doubleheader. Vogt gave up six runs, five of them earned; on six hits while striking out seven. She was relieved by Megan Robertson, who allowed four runs on six hits in two innings of action before she was replaced by Moore.

Sammy Garrett homered and drove in four runs in the nightcap and Chelsea Griffiths went 2-3 with two doubles. In addition, Roark went 3-5 at the plate and Strunk went 2-3 with two RBI.

The Indians reeled off five runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-0 in game two. They upped their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. But, when things looked especially grim for Ottumwa, the Bulldogs mounted a ferocious comeback. The girls ripped off five runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the gap to 7-5. Then, in the seventh, the Bulldogs completed their comeback by putting five more runs on the scoreboard to to go up 10-7.
