Ottumwa picks up two close wins on Senior Night

OTTUMWA —  The Ottumwa baseball team did just enough to win in its two-game sweep of Des Moines Roosevelt Monday on Senior Night at Legion Memorial Field.

The Bulldogs rallied to defeat the Roughriders 4-3 in game one, and they hung on to beat Roosevelt 5-4 in the nightcap. The Bulldogs got its offense rolling in just the nick of time against the Roughriders in the front half of the doubleheader. After being held scoreless for the first five innings, Ottumwa rallied for three runs to go up 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Collin Schulz spearheaded the three-run inning by poking a 2-RBI double into right centerfield. Schulz went on to score from third later in the inning when Roosevelt catcher Charlie Rose couldn't locate a wild pitch by Cole Maharry.

Roosevelt bounced back to score a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3. The Bulldogs failed to get a run across home plate in the bottom half of the inning and the game went into overtime. In the bottom of the eighth, however, Kyle Keck, who worked eight solid innings on the hill for the Bulldogs in a winning effort; belted a triple to a gap in left centerfield. Moments later, Keck scored on a wild pitch to Cody Miller to give Ottumwa the victory.

The Bulldogs used a five-run third inning to edge the Roughriders in game two. Collin Schulz and Chase Wood were both at the vanguard of the Bulldogs big inning. Schulz, who went 3-3 at the plate in the game, cranked a triple to centerfield and Wood, in his first ever varsity game, blasted a bases-loaded triple over the head of Roughrider left fielder Sam Norland.

After pitching six strong innings, Ottumwa starting pitcher Spencer Fuller ran into some adversity in the top of the seventh. The Roughriders used several hits to whittle Ottumwa's lead down to 5-4, but Bulldogs were able to escape with the victory when Ottumwa catcher Seth Staton gunned down a Roosevelt base runner trying to steal third for the third out of inning.

Ottumwa (20-17, 16-8) played at Dowling today in a regular-season ending doubleheader.
