Bulldog girls tennis team cruises to dual victory

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls tennis team steamrolled Des Moines North 11-0 Tuesday.

The Bulldogs commanding victory was as impressive and definitive as it appears at first glance. Ottumwa only yielded one set to the Polar Bears in the entire meet.

Jennifer Klodt and Hayli Beeson both blanked their opponents in No. 2 and No. 3 singles action.

"She [Beeson] had consistent shots and nice approach shots," Ottumwa girls tennis coach Emily Phommachack said.

No. 1 singles Kelsey Granneman, No. 5 singles Jill Ardueser and No. 6 singles Katie Zingg were almost as impressive as their teammates, as they all only surrendered one game to their opponents. After cruising to a 6-2 victory in the first set, Sydney Grooms grinded out a 7-5 victory int he second set in No. 4 singles play.

"She [Grooms] stayed mentally tough throughout her match and had forceful backhands,"  Phommachack said.

Beeson and Ardueser needed three sets, but they managed to defeat their opponents 5-7, 6-3 (10-5) in No. 1 singles.

"They picked up their game, playing more aggressive and smart," Phommachack said, "pulling out the win."

Zingg and Beth Overturf didn't have nearly as much of a problem with their opponents, as they blanked the Polar Bears 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles. The duo of Grooms and Megan Black and the team of Anna Graeff and Abagail Messer triumphed in No. 3 and No. 4 doubles action.

The Bulldogs play at Des Moines Roosevelt Thursday.
