The Pekin boys track and field team dominated its annual Panther relay meet, as the boys grabbed first with an impressive overall score of 209.
Davis County finished second with 181 points and Albia claimed third with 165. Cade Millikin zipped to a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with 2:15.07 and Austin Fariss nabbed first in the 1,600-meters, completing the race in 5:18.66. In addition, Colton Lanman claimed first in the 110-meter hurdles with 16.14, Chase Earnest earned first-place honors in the shot put with a heave of 45-09 and Eric Adam leapt to a first-place finish in the high jump with 5-08. Plus, Pekins' 4x800-meter relay team took first with 8:58.46 and the Panthers' distance medley relay snared first with 3:55.72.
Davis County, which competed in Class AA events, the Mustangs and Albia competed in Class 2A events, while other area teams (Pekin, Cardinal, Tri County) competed in Class A events. Each got solid contributions out of a slew of its athletes. Andrew Cowles had a stellar day, as he took first in the 110-meter hurdles with 16.68 and the 400-meter hurdles with 1:02.47. Plus, Justin Vollmer grabbed first in the 1,600 with 5:07.77, Wayne Doerscher claimed first in shot put with a heave of 46-00 and Mustang Zeb Conner came in first in the discus with 134-03. The Mustangs also earned first-place honors in the 4x400, the 4x800, the distance medley and the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle.
For the Blue Demons, Alex Schultz snared first in the 100 meters with 11:08, Ryan Sarver came in first in the 200-meter dash with 23.58 and Tanner Wynn grabbedd first in the 400-meter dash with 55.04. Albia, however, also enjoyed a lot of success in the day's relay races. The Blue Demons captured first in the 4x200 relay with 1:34.39, the 4x400 with 3:33.35 and the 4x100 with 45.33.
Cardinal came in fifth with 138 points and Tri County finished seventh with 34. Comet Blake Wright took first in the 100-meter dash with 11.52 and Quinn Honomichl snared first in the 400 meters with 57.52. Cardinal's Charlie Rachford grabbed first in the long jump with a leap of 20.01 and the Comets 4x100-meter relay team placed first with 1:04.51. Tri County's Spencer Steinke claimed first in the 200-meter dash with 24.02 seconds.
