Bulldogs pick up big win in league opener

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls soccer team picked up a sorely needed 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Des Moines Lincoln in its CIML Metro league opener Tuesday, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Fresh on the heels of a 10-0 defeat to Waukee the night before, the Bulldogs, showing a lot of grit, battled back from a 2-0 first-half deficit to pick up a confidence-boosting victory.

"We were able to use our speed and beat them to the outside," Ottumwa boys soccer coach Brett McKenzie said. "We really played well after that first 15 or 20 minutes. It's definitely good to get to play a game we can win and to go out and win it."

Zendy Montalvo and Elsa Sandoval gave the Railsplitters a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first half. Ottumwa's Kathy Lopez scored the Bulldogs' first goal of the night to bring her team within one with about five minutes left in the first half. Then, in the second half, Taylor Wertheim tied the game at 2-2 with a goal. Ottumwa's Candelaria Tomas, off an assist from Mackenzie Sutton, put the Bulldogs ahead for good with a goal to give her team a 3-2 advantage.

"We were using the outsides well," McKenzie said. "We got good runs from Veronica Gonzalez and Gracie Rivera. They also did a good job getting back on defense and helping to cover."

Ottumwa (3-5) plays at Des Moines Hoover Monday in CIML Metro action.
