Bulldog girls blown out by undefeated Valley

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls basketball team now has firsthand experience of why West Des Moines Valley is ranked second in Class 5A.

The undefeated Tigers handed the Bulldogs a lopsided 99-35 defeat Tuesday.

Jami Nickerson catalyzed Ottumwa's offense with a team-best seven points and Rachel Zingg and Carrissa Hite each added 6.

The Tigers jumped out to a 26-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and, by halftime, that lead had ballooned to 58-14.

"There is a reason they are undefeated," Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson said. "We had way too many turnovers and we let their pressure bother us too much and we never got into our offensive flow at all. We have to be more competitive on the defensive end against high quality teams like that."

Grace Vander Weide paced the powerful Tiger squad with a game-high 25 and Hannah Fuller complemented her teammates' efforts with 20 points of her own.

Ottumwa (3-9, 3-3) plays Des Moines Lincoln at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Evans Middle School gymnasium.

The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season at Lincoln 55-42 Dec. 13, and the Railsplitters will look to exorcise those demons Friday evening.

"It should be a good environment and Lincoln is going to be really trying to beat us," he said. "The last game was close until the final three minutes and hopefully we can put together a complete game."
