Sigourney falls to Montezuma

SIGOURNEY — Blaine Gretter scored a game-high 15 points for the Sigourney boys basketball team, which fell just short of a South Iowa Cedar League win on Friday night against Montezuma. Siraj Thomason led three Braves in double figures with 14 points as Montezuma pulled away in the final three minutes for a 62-52 win over the Savages.

“We were down one shooting at the line to try to tie the game with three minutes left, but we just couldn’t make the plays we needed to make to win that game,” Sigourney head coach Mitch Eslick said. “It was really a game that could have gone either way.”

Sigourney (3-11, 3-11) will travel to North Mahaska for an SICL area matchup on Tuesday night.

Ferretti races Fairfield past Washington

FAIRFIELD — One week after providing the Fairfield boys basketball team with a dramatic conference win, junior Federico Ferretti made sure the Trojans didn’t have to sweat out the final seconds on Friday against Washington. Ferretti scored 29 points before fouling out to lead the Trojans to an easy 72-53 Southeast Conference win over Washington one week after hitting a last-second shot in a 49-48 SEC triumph over Mount Pleasant.
