CENTERVILLE — The Centerville Big Reds are riding a wave of momentum after coming off of the winter break. A hard charging Davis County team threatened to take away an SCC win in the second half, however, the Reds would regain their strength for an 84-65 win on Friday.
The conference victory for the Centerville Big Reds is their fifth-straight victory.
The first quarter was all Centerville offense, as they quickly raced out to a double digit lead in the first five minutes of the game. Centerville held Davis County scoreless for a period of 3:23 while they went on a 17-0 run to jump out to a 19-point lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter.
Centerville jumped out to a 20-point lead with a free throw from Kolton Gonnerman just a minute and a half into the second quarter. Davis County would cut the deficit no lower than 14 points as the Big Reds took a 21 point lead in to the second half.
The Mustangs went on a 17-6 run to start the first five and a half minutes to open the second half, cutting the Big Reds’ 21 point lead at the half to just 10 points.
Centerville’s defense would cut into Davis County’s new found offensive push, but the Mustangs would finish the final 2:30 of the third quarter, outscoring Centerville 6-5. Centerville, though, would still hold a 64-53 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Centerville would regain some of its offensive and defensive muster, and would keep a double-digit lead for the duration of the fourth quarter, before grabbing the South Central Conference home victory.
The Big Reds would begin stretching out their lead again in the fourth quarter, outscoring Davis County 20-12 in the final eight minutes to pick up the win by a 19-point margin.
Centerville (8-4) will travel to Kirksville tonight before traveling to Osceola for an SCC matchup on Tuesday. Davis County (6-7, 2-3) is back in SCC action at Chariton next Friday night.
