Cardinal girls fall to New London

ELDON — The Cardinal girls basketball team fell to New London 68-60 despite getting 14 points from Lexi Fullencamp Friday in SEISC South action.

The disparity in free-throw attempts between the two teams spelled doom for the Comets.

"We shot 11 free throws, they shot 44," Cardinal girls coach Aaron Dose said. "It's very difficult when they get 28 points from the line. Credit them for getting to the line, but we need to learn to play defense with our feet and not our hands."

Aside from Fullencamp's athletic exploits, Jessie McElderry bolstered the Comets' offensive firepower with 13 points and Danae Moses tossed in nine — all coming from beyond the arc. Schylar Conger also turned in a solid game, corralling a team-high 10 rebounds, coming up with four steals, and swatting two shots.

Far more important than the outcome of the game, the Comets managed to raise $1,800 to promote Breast Cancer awareness during the game. In addition, Cardinal's 1985 state qualifying girls' basketball team was introduced during halftime of the game.

Not only were the former Comet players in attendance, but the girls who decorated that acclaimed team along with their coach Steve Blair took a special interest in this year's Cardinal girls' basketball team.

"They got to meet them and the 1985 coach gave us a good speech, too," Dose said.

Cardinal (5-8, 5-7) plays at SEISC South opponent Central Lee Monday.
