AREA VOLLEYBALL ACTION: Rockets pick up come-from-behind victory

OTTUMWA — The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Pella Christian 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 15-12) Tuesday in the Region 6, Class 2A Regional semifinals.

“Wow, what a match,” EBF coach Gladys Genskow said. “We came out in the first two sets over playing the ball and making too many mistakes. We settled down and started playing better as a team and pushed for every point.”

Tasha Alexander spearheaded the Rocket offense with 23 kills and Amanda Ratliff added 15 digs. In addition, Alexander had 12 digs and Paige Shafer paced the Rockets with 49 assists and McKinley Moore added seven blocks. Karlie Taylor went 17-17 on serves. Alexander, Harlie Boyer and Shafer each had two aces.

“I am proud of their effort and how everyone worked together to make this win a reality,” Genskow said.

The Rockets (29-8) will play host to Pekin Friday in the Class 2A Regional semifinals.

Pekin spikers sweep Van Buren, advance to EBF

ELDON — The Pekin volleyball team swept Van Buren Tuesday to advance to the Class 2A, Region 6 semifinals. The Panther girls defeated Warriors, 25-10, 25-20, 25-13, Tuesday night in Eldon.

Leslie Stone led Pekin with 28 assists and Jessica Horras contributed nine kills. Stone also had a team-leading 12 digs and Jacinta Cooley, Cheyann Lankford and Maranda Baker each had seven kills.

Cheyann Lankford had three aces and Madelyn Baker and Maranda Baker each had two aces. Madelyn Baker and Lankford went a combined 31-31 on aces. Cooley added four blocks.

The Panthers (14-12) play at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Friday in the semifinals. Van Buren ends the season with a record of 13-17.

Sigourney spikers edge Twin Cedars in five

SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney volleyball team squeaked by Twin Cedars in a five-game thriller, winning 25-12, 13-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-12 in the Class 1A, Region 8 quarterfinal on Tuesday.

Sigourney’s Jordan Carter bolstered the Savage offense with 20 kills and Val Magil contributed 10 kills. Sydney Davis led Sigourney with 33 assists and Becca Ohland paced the Savages with 15 digs. Karah Appleget went 16-17 on serves and Davis went 19-21.

“One of our goals was to come out strong in game one and we did,” Sigourney coach Chris Carter said. “We got up 12-4 at one point in game one. We came out strong and took command of the game.”

From that point on, the coach said the match went back and forth. Savages jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game five and hung on for a three-point victory.

Sigourney (14-6) will play host to  Winfield-Mount Union, who upset 12th-ranked New London in five games, on Friday in the regional semifinals. Twin Cedars finishes the season with a record of 13-8.

In other action on Tuesday in Class 1A, Region 8, Moravia won a battle of Bluegrass Conference foes with a 27-25, 25-9, 25-21 sweep of Seymour. The Mohawks (11-7) will return to Moulton to take on second-ranked Holy Trinity in the regional semifinals on Friday while the Warriorettes wrap up a winning season at 11-7.
