OTTUMWA — The Indian Hills volleyball team is fully aware of how tough it is to earn a win over the Kirkwood Eagles.

In their third match of the season, IHCC had  to shake off an opening-game loss to win in four over the Eagles in their third match of the season-opening Southeastern Tournament. Last month, the Warriors scored a five-game win at home against Kirkwood by winning the fifth game 17-15 after trailing 9-3.

On Tuesday night, it was Kirkwood’s turn to rally back for five-game win over IHCC. The fourth-ranked (DII) Eagles bounced back after dropping games two and three by a combined four points to earn a 25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 25-17 and 15-9 win over the Warriors at Johnson Hall.

“We’re a little inconsistent hitting-wise right now. They’re middle hitter really came to life and we created a lot of errors for ourselves,” IHCC head volleyball coach Lyndsey Lyon said.

Ailime deFreitas led IHCC’s 90-93 serving effort with a perfect 16-16 effort while also setting up all 50 kills and contributing on a team-best five blocks. Peyton Crosser added a team-high 15 kills and had the Warriors lone ace serve.

Indian Hills (25-8) will conclude the regular season this weekend in the Jefferson College Invitational in Hillsboro, Mo. IHCC begins the two-day competition on Friday with matches against Missouri State-West Plains at 5 p.m. and Hutchinson at 7 p.m.

“We’ve just been overcome with players being sick or injured. We’re a little bit run down right now,” Lyon said. “We need to come out with an aggressive attitude. We need to be ready to pick up on some points immediately.”
