Sigourney spikers end season in semifinals

SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney volleyball team fell to Winfield-Mount Union 3-0 in the Region 8, Class 1A semifinals Friday, ending what has been a solid season for the Savages.

The Wolves bested Sigourney 27-25, 25-18 and 25-23. Jordan Carter shepherded the Savage offense with a team-high 13 kills and senior Val Magil, playing in what would turn out to be her last match in a Sigourney jersey; contributed 11 kills. Sydney Davis distributed 27 of the Savages’ 29 assists and Becca Ohland led Sigourney with 20 digs. In addition, Carter was 11-11 serving and Magil was 13-14 on serves.

Coach Chris Carter said overall she was happy with the way her team played in spite of the loss.

“I thought defensively we played one of our best defensive matches we’ve had all season,” she said. “I was proud of the fact that we didn’t give up and we just kept on fighting until the end.”

Carter said her team did a good of job of getting off to a good start in games one and two, noting that the Savages led early in both games. Also, the coach said she was proud of the way her team battled back from an early 8-3 deficit in game three — the Savages actually led 17-15 at one point in the match — before eventually falling to Winfield.

“Winfield came up with the big plays when they needed them,” Carter said.

The coach praised Magil for the time and effort she gave to volleyball program.

“She was a real senior leader,” she said.

Aside from Magil, this season’s team will all be back next season.

Moravia (11-8) also saw its season come to end as it fell to No. 2 Holy Trinity Catholic (1A) 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-9) in the Region 8, Class 1A semifinals. Trinity Catholic and Winfield-Mount will meet in Region 8 finals Wednesday at Mount Pleasant.
