Ottumwa dominates DM East in opener

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa boys tennis team blanked overmatched CIML Metro Conference opponent Des Moines East Thursday 11-0 in its league opener.

The Bulldogs were dominant throughout, not yielding a set to the Scarlets in the entire meet.

“It was nice to finally get our first conference meet in after three rain outs,” Ottumwa boys tennis coach Alan Paris said. “The boys responded well as we took control early in each match and never let up.”

The Ray brothers, Steve and Zack, both made quick work of their opponents. Steve shut out Rio Cason 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles action, and Zach thrashed Charlies Yiong 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. No. 3 Jared Bohlmann dominated Jackson Nguyen 6-1, 6-2, and Sam Kramer corralled a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 4 singles. Seth White and Nich Sedore also cruised to easy victories in their No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches.

Doubles action was all Bulldogs. The Ray brothers dismantled Cason and Yiong in No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. In addition, Mitch Buller and Sedore blanked their opponents in No. 4 doubles competition.

“Our goal was to play each game like it was the winning game in the match and I’d say they met that goal,” Paris said.

Ottumwa plays Indianola today at Dan Staggs Courts.
