JOHNSTON — A tournament filled with talented teams from Class 5A brought out a very good finish from the Ottumwa girls golf team as the Bulldogs begin to look toward making another state tournament run. Led by the individual finish of Whitney Dostal, Ottumwa finished third as a team with a round of 355 on Monday at the Johnston Invitational, 29 shots back of Waukee and just seven shots back of upcoming regional rival Dowling Catholic at Jester Park.
Dostal, who picked up her first medalist honor on Friday at the Oskaloosa Invitational, set another career milestone with her lowest round on the way to leading the Bulldogs with her third-place individual finish. Dostal’s round of 79 left her just six shots back of meet medalist Sarah Splittgerber of Dowling Catholic and three shots behind Waukee’s runner-up Jasmine Wyzgowski.
“It’s my first time shooting in the 70s at a meet. That was pretty exciting,” Dostal said. “I just hit a lot of really good shots. I hit a lot of greens. The conditions were a lot nicer too.”
Ottumwa and Dowling Catholic will not only see each other in regional competition in May. The Bulldogs are set to host the Maroons as part of the Ottumwa Invitational on Thursday, weather permitting.
But first, Ottumwa will return home to host a CIML Metro Dual at the Country Club course against Indianola today starting at 3:30 p.m.
