Pioneers pound Ottumwa

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Maharishi boys tennis team keeps on rolling, no matter who the competition is.

Already with wins over bigger schools like Fairfield, Burlington, Iowa City West and Iowa City High, the Pioneers added the Ottumwa Bulldogs to the list of bigger schools toppled this season. MSAE scored an 8-1 win to remain unbeaten in dual meets under first-year head coach Steve Briggs.

“The match as a whole was a lot closer than that final score shows,” Ottumwa head boys tennis coach Alan Paris said. “Our guys never gave up. They kept competing. I’m proud of that. It was nice to play in great weather against a great program.”

There were several quality matches throughout the night, highlighted by a 6-3, 6-3 win in the top singles match by MSAE’s Sam Stickels over Ottumwa’s Steve Ray and a 6-4, 6-3 win for Stickels and Raffi Gelfand over Steve and Zack Ray in the top doubles match. Zack Ray did score an impressive win for the Bulldogs, beating Solaris Nite 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.

“Zach played a nice, controlled match to win,” Paris said. “He’s been very consistent at that position for us. He hasn’t lost there yet.”

Ottumwa (2-3) returns to CIML Metro action looking for a third straight conference win tonight at home against Des Moines North at 4 p.m.
