DES MOINES — Defending corner kicks was the Ottumwa girls soccer team's achilles heel in its 5-0 loss at Des Moines Hoover Monday in CIML Metro Conference action.
If it weren't for a couple of defensive breakdowns on corner kicks, Ottumwa coach Brett McKinsey said the final score would have been closer.
"What really did us in was defending the corners," the coach said. "We weren't marking very well, and they took advantage of that. We just weren't defending well in the corner kicks."
The girls, however, turned in a pretty solid first half, as they only trailed the Huskies 1-0 at the end of the first half.
"We did a pretty good job in the first half," McKinsey said. "I think we could have been a little bit more aggressive offensively."
Hoover's second goal came a little over 10 minutes into the second half. The Huskies hung two more goals on the scoreboard about 15 minutes later to go up 4-0. Hoover's Alicia Lovan scored the game's final goal 77:50 into the game.
Ottumwa's offense produced 10 shots on the Huskies' goalkeeper, and Averi Cash finished with 22 saves.
Ottumwa (3-6) returns home today to take on Keokuk at Eric Wertheim Field in a non-conference game.
"It's always nice to get one of these out of your system and have a chance to redeem yourself," McKinsey said. "It will be nice to have one at home and be able to play for the home crowd again."
