Patritto shines, Ottumwa linksters take first at Marshalltown

	 	 	

MARSHALLTOWN — Darby Patritto shot the top round of the day and the Ottumwa girls golf team took first place at the Linda Bloom Invitational at Marshalltown Tuesday.

Patritto claimed first place with an 81 — she shot a 42 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine — and the Bulldogs took first out of seven teams with a collective score of 343, which was 13 strokes better than second-place Grinnell.

"We carded four scores in the 80s," Ottumwa boys golf coach Scott Maas, who was filling in for girls coach Stephanie Mishler, said. "Anytime you do that, you're going to have a good score,” he said.

Maas noted that to win the tourney, Ottumwa had to beat traditionally high-caliber squads such as Grinnell and Grundy City.

While Patritto was the queen of the course on this day, she had plenty of company in the top 10. Ottumwa's Whitney Dostal finished just outside the top five, taking sixth with an 86. In addition, Bulldogs' Abbie Budan and Hannah Lien tied for seventh, as they both, along with Grinnell's Amber Kracht, shot an 88.

Maas was especially pleased with Lien, who went into the tourney as the Bulldogs' No. 6 player.

“She played extremely well today,” he said.

"I had a lot of really nice drives," Lien added.

Meanwhile, Ottumwa's Bailey Palmer shot a 98 and Callie Lawson carded a 100.

The Linda Bloom Invitational is named after the late Linda Bloom, who was a longtime girls golf coach for Marshalltown.

Ottumwa will compete at the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Invitational Monday where they will face a lot of the same teams they will meet at the Class 4A regionals.
