---- — OTTUMWA — For senior Ottumwa track and field athletes Seth Griffiths, Logan McCarty and Henry DePaz, it was a good way to go out. All three Bulldogs performed in what was their final track meet Thursday at Class 4A Co-ed Regional track meet in Johnston.

McCarty posted personal records in the 400-meter hurdles and as leadoff of the Bulldogs 4x400 relay team. The senior Bulldogs zoomed to a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time in 58.65 and he ran his leg of the relay race in 53.09.

"Logan McCarty ran really well in the hurdles," Ottumwa boys track and field coach Jim Nickerson said.

Griffiths, who had finally returned to full health after battling an ankle injury for the crux of the season, finished eighth in the 100-meter dash — the top eight finishers scored points for their respective teams at the meet — with 11.68 and he took seventh in the 200-meter dash with 23.73.

"He [Griffiths] looked really good," Nickerson said, "back to his old self again."

Meanwhile, DePaz posted his fastest time in the 400-meter dash, placing 10th with 56.73.

"I'm going to miss those guys," Nickerson said about his senior athletes.

Some other highlights for the Bulldogs included freshman Isaiah Hutchison, who finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3 inches.

"We were very pleased with Isaiah Hutchinson in the high jump, a freshman jumping 19-3," Nickerson said.

In addition, Cody McConnell ran to a seventh-place finish in the 1,600, as he finished the race in 4:49.44 and took seventh in the 800 meters with 2:11.20. Ottumwa finished in the top eight of every relay race, which included a fifth-place finish in the 4x800, where Kaleb Norris, along with Andy Belachew, Isaac Ramos, Connor Hansen finished the race in 9:14.12.

Even with the memorable swan songs by the Bulldog seniors and a slew of other solid efforts, Ottumwa only managed to finish seventh with 31 points. West Des Moines Valley claimed first-place honors with 155.2 points. Still, Nickerson was happy with the effort his guys exerted.

"I just told them to go out and run the best they could and they did," Nickerson said. "I'm really proud of them."
