Dostal takes first, Bulldogs qualify for state

CEDAR RAPIDS — Going into Class 5A regionals Monday, Whitney Dostal was in the midst of what had already been an uber-successful season brimming with accomplishments. But at regionals, the junior linkster's season reached its apex, as Dostal posted the top individual round of 82.

"At this point, it's absolutely the highlight," Ottumwa girls golf coach Stephanie Mishler said about Dostal's regional performance. "She just played consistent from start to finish and handled trouble when she got into it really well."

Dostal's sterling outing coupled with a solid round from senior Darby Patritto, who tied for fourth with an 87, spurred the Bulldogs to a second place finish overall and a collective score of 362 strokes.

"Having two girls [Dostal and Patritto both finished in the top five at regionals last year] in the top five for the second year in a row speaks volume about the Ottumwa High Schools girls golf program," Mishler said

The Bulldogs finished only three strokes behind first place West Des Moines Valley, which finished with a score of 359 strokes. If a team places in the top two at regionals, then every golfer on that team qualifies.

Ottumwa's strong finish was buoyed by its upperclassmen. Aside from Dostal and Patritto, junior Abbie Budan also turned in a solid outing, as she shot a 90.

"It's really encouraging to have those upperclassmen who come through in key situations," Mishler said.

M.J. Kimin of Cedar Rapids Washington claimed runner-up status with an 83. Burlington finished well behind Ottumwa in third place with a score of 388 strokes.

Rounding things out for Ottumwa was Bailey Palmer, who shot a 103, Hannah Lien, who carded a 105 and Shea Collett, who finished with a 115.

The Bulldogs will compete at the Class 5A State Golf Meet on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 28-29 at the Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora.
