NICEVILLE, Fla. — The Indian Hills softball was so close to finally getting their second win on its season-opening swing through the south late Friday.

After dropping the first game of the Jimmy Stewart Tournament Friday to Florida Gulf-Coast, 8-0, IHCC found themselves locked in an extra-inning battle with Alabama’s Shelton State. The Warriors, however, could not stop their losing streak from reaching 10 in a row as an eighth-inning run pushed Shelton State to a 4-3 victory.

“Florida Gulf Coast is, in my opinion, the best team we’ve played so far on this trip,” Indian Hills head coach Jim Overturf said. “Shelton State was also a solid team. We played well against them. It was just a tough loss, but it was definitely a much more competitive effort by our young team.”

On Thursday, the Warriors saw its losing streak extended to eight straight after being swept by Pensacola State. A five-run fifth inning allowed the Pirates to pull away from a 4-4 tie on the way to earning a 12-4 win in game one. Four runs in the second inning helped Pensacola open an early lead in a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

“We struggled with our pitching and we have a lot of work to do defensively,” Overturf said. “The defense did improve in the second game, but we still struggled with one bad inning. We needed someone to step up in that game on the offensive side.”

Laci Moore had her first two hits of her Warriors career. The former Cardinal star also scored her first two runs as four different players scored the five IHCC runs during the doubleheader.

Indian Hills (1-10) continues play in the Jimmy Stewart Tournament today. IHCC will face Louisiana-Eunice at 9 a.m. before facing Lake Michigan at 11 a.m.
