Falcons finish Arizona trip strong

Ottumwa Courier

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Putting runs on the board wasn’t a problem for the Indian Hills baseball team on their season-opening Arizona road trip. Keeping other teams from scoring more was.

The Falcons found a perfect time to solve that problem, giving up just five runs in their final three games to ride home on a winning streak. IHCC swept two wins on Friday, beating Chandler-Gilbert 5-2 and Pro Train in eight innings 11-0 before closing the trip Saturday with an 11-3 win at Phoenix College.

Unlike many of their games in Arizona, IHCC found themselves in a pitchers duel Friday against Chandler-Gilbert. The Falcons and Coyotes battled through six scoreless innings before both teams scored a pair of seventh-inning runs. Indian Hills snapped the tie in the eighth with a run and added two insurance scores in the ninth to snap a five-game losing streak.

Taylor Ostrich had three hits against Chandler-Gilbert and was one of five different Falcon hitters to drive in a run. Former Albia pitcher Jake Stalzer kept the game scoreless into the sixth, striking out six batters in a tough no-decision.

Adam Deneke and Brennan Floss kept the solid IHCC pitching going in game two on Friday, tossing a combined two-hit shutout against Pro Train. Freshman outfielder Caleb Ratzman went 3-3 at the plate while joining sophomore Zach Sims in drilling a triple and scoring three runs.

Another 11-run effort gave IHCC a final win in Arizona on Saturday as an 18-hit attack led the way to an 11-3 win at Phoenix. Deneke crushed a homer as part of a three-hit, three-RBI attack with two runs scored. Joel Booker added three hits while Jordan Berry added two hits, including a triple, drove in two runs and scored once against the Bears.

Indian Hills (4-6) returns home for the 10 straight games at Pat Daugherty Field in Centerville. The Falcons take on Ellsworth in their home opener Thursday afternoon starting at 3 p.m.
