DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls and boys bowling teams wrote another chapter in the bowling program’s renowned history by taking first at the state qualifying meets Thursday.

The girls breezed to an easy victory, finishing with overall score of 2,933 — more than 600 pins better than their nearest competitor.

“We bowled pretty well,” Ottumwa girls coach Doug Techel said. “We by far had our best baker rounds all year, averaging 220 a game, so we’re pretty excited to advance to the state tournament. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us to bring back another trophy.”

Meanwhile, the boys eked out a victory, as they topped second-place West Des Moines Valley 3,005-3,002.

Bailey Palmer posted the top individual score for the girls, rolling an average of 211. Palmer, however, had plenty of company in the top 10 as five other Bulldogs rolled averages that landed them in this elite group. Payton Wilbanks posted the second highest average for the Bulldogs, as she rolled a 187 average.

“Bailey and Payton both bowled well in their individual games,” Techel said.

Finishing right behind her in fourth was teammate Michaela Malloy, who bowled an average of 185.5. Representing Ottumwa in the back half of the top 10 were Sydney Swallow, who placed sixth with an average of 168.5 and Lynissa Lasley, who snared seventh with a 164.5 average. Sierra Lennie came in 19th with an average of 131.5.

The Ottumwa boys performance was spearheaded by Isaac Goodman, who bowled the second highest individual average overall with a 233.5. Jordan Mitchell also gave his team big boost by rolling a 222 average and placing third overall. In addition, Austin Palmer snuck into the top 10 in the nine spot by bowling an average of 197.5. Ottumwa’s  Anthony Robert bowled an average of 195 — which was just one pin shy of landing him in the top 10 — and placed 11th, Braxton Coble (184.5) came in 16th and Joey Lee (174.5) finished 21st.

The Iowa Class 2A State Tournament will take place next Friday, Feb. 22, at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines, starting at 1 p.m.
