The Ottumwa 15-year-old Babe Ruth Squad makes the nearly 1,000 mile trek to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia Saturday to compete in the the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 World Series. The boys kick off the World Series tourney at 3 p.m. Saturday when they take on Greater Vienna, Virginia's state champ, at Fireman's Field.
To earn a berth in the prestigious tournament, the boys had to win the Midwest Plains regional championship in Boonville, Mo. Ottumwa accomplished this task in thrilling fashion, rallying in the final inning to claim a victory over Minnesota state champ Hi Tower. Trailing 5-4 going into the seventh inning, Chase Wood blasted a three-run home run that secured a 7-4 win for the boys. Far from an anomaly, Ottumwa showed a knack for pulling out comeback victories in the tourney. Aside from a 7-4 win over Lincoln, Neb., the Iowa champs had rally to win all of its tourney games.
