LIVE: Hawkeyes hit the Broncos hard for 10-0 after one quarter

IOWA CITY —

Marcus Collins set the tone for hard-hitting opening quarter of defense for the Iowa Hawkeyes, smashing Western Michigan’s Dareyon Chance on the opening kickoff return Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. The hits just kept right on coming during a very physical first 15 minutes for Iowa, who didn’t allow one first down to the visiting Broncos allowing the Hawkeyes to build a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

The Broncos gained just 27 yards offensively in the first quarter, all of had to come through the air. Western Michigan’s three rushing attempts, all by Brian Fields, were stopped by the Hawkeyes for a total of five yards lost.

Iowa, meanwhile, didn’t have to wait long to get its first score of the day as Kevonte-Martin Marley’s 44-yard punt return set up the Hawkeyes on the Bronco 22 for its first drive of the day. The Hawkeyes reached the Western Michigan 3-yard-line before settling for a Mike Meyer 20-yard field goal to go up 3-0.

Iowa wouldn’t settle for three points later in the first quarter. After gambling on a fourth-down play from the Bronco 38 and converting on a Jake Rudock 12-yard pass to tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz, the Hawkeye passing attack produced a touchdown two plays later when Rudock found Jake Hillyer on a 21-yard connection late in the opening quarter, opening the Hawkeye lead to 10-0.
