Comets top Mohawks in four

MORAVIA — In just the second match of the volleyball season, the Cardinal Comets picked up their first win on Tuesday night with a four-game win over Moravia. The Comets split the first two games with the Mohawks, winning game one 25-22 before dropping game two 25-18 on the way to winning the last two games 25-17 and 25-16.

“We did a nice job of playing up to our tempo,” Cardinal head coach Jerald Harter said. “They (Moravia) passed the ball a lot, so we took some hard swings and ended a lot of those rallies. We also got a long rally going with our serve and kind of put all three games we won out of reach.”

Dakota Durflinger led the Comets serving attack, going 16-19 with seven aces while also picking up five blocks on defense. Leah Ostrander paced Cardinal’s net attack, slamming home 10 kills on 27-30 hitting.

Cardinal (1-1, 0-1) returns home and returns to the Southeast Iowa Superconference south for the first time since opening the season against Holy Trinity, the top-ranked team in Class 1A, as the Comets will host Fairfield Maharishi tonight. Moravia (2-2, 1-0) returns to the Bluegrass Conference tonight at Melcher-Dallas.
