Warrior spikers win three of four

UNION, Mo. — The Indian Hills volleyball team found itself a little short-handed over the weekend, but coach Lyndsey Lyon and the Warriors adjusted to the situation and won three of four matches in tournament action at East Central Missouri.

Warrior outside hitter Carla Novaes did not make the trip due to a sprained ankle, but IHCC was still able to put a solid line up together and overcome three of the four teams. The Warriors suffered a 3-0 loss to Illinois Central on Friday night, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20, but bounced back to down Mineral Area 3-1 by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22.

“We got off to a slow start against Illinois Central,” said Lyon. “We have had injuries and sickness come through our team recently. We were getting a couple players back into the mix that have been out of practice for a few days to a week.”

On Saturday, IHCC defeated host East Central 3-1 by scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-14 and then downed Jefferson 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 26-24.

“We finally got everyone into position and were able to finish games,” Lyon said.

The 3-1 outing improves IHCC’s record to 21-5 on the season. Indian Hills will host fourth-ranked Iowa Western at the Tom Arnold Net Center on Tuesday in a Region XI contest, and it will also be Sophomore Night for the Warriors.

After the loss Friday, IHCC pulled together in the win over Mineral Area. Emily Eswonia and Cristanine Vosconcoles combined for 22 kills in that match, while Jessica Black had 19 digs and Eswonia added 16. Ailime deFreitas set things up with 39 assists, while also serving 24-25. Peyton Crosser was 14-16 serving and Shelby Lauterbach was 17-20 with four aces.

Lyon made it a point to mention the play of Lauterbach.

“Shelby stepped up for us huge on the right side,” Lyon said. “She was very effective hitting as well as put up a strong block for us.”

Lauterbach had 13 kills Saturday morning in the win over East Central. Eswonia led the way with 15 while Crosser added 12. Black had 27 digs while deFreitas had 58 assists and was 19-20 serving. Vosconcoles was 15-15 serving, Eswonia was 17-17 with two aces and Lauterbach was 17-18.

“We aren’t used to playing more than three games, so we were a little fatigued Saturday,” said Lyon. “But I was very proud of the way this team stuck together and played great volleyball.”

In the win over Jefferson, Crosser had 10 kills while Lauterbach added nine. deFreitas had 40 assists and 10 digs, while Black led the back row with 13 digs. deFreitas was 23-25 serving while Arika Johnson was 13-14 and Crosser was 12-14.
