Fifth-ranked Rockets take SCC make-up sweep at Centerville

CENTERVILLE — One week after having an originally-scheduled South Central Conference opener at Centerville postponed due to excessive heat, fifth-ranked (2A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont breezed through the rescheduled trip to Lakeview Gymnasium on Thursday. The Rockets outlasted the Redettes in game one, 25-21, then allowed just 18 points the rest of the match to complete the sweep with wins of 25-7 and 25-11 in the final two games of the sweep.

We played a solid game,” EBF head volleyball coach Gladys Genskow said. “We gave up too my points on errors the first game, but came back with adjustments the second and third games to shut them down. We ran our offense very effectively along with aggressive serving gave us a dominate edge past Centerville.”

Rocket junior Tasha Alexander stepped up to lead EBF in both serving (14-16) and hitting (28-33) while joining teammate Karlie Taylor with five aces against Centerville. The Rockets had a huge serving advantage in the sweep on the Redettes, delivering 14 aces as a team while not allowing one to Centerville’s service game.

Alyssa Barger led the Redettes both defensively and at the net with three kills and 13 digs. Sammi Cowan added a pair of blocks and three assists as Centerville came up with just five to EBF’s 42 dishes.

This may not be the first time the fifth-ranked (2A) Rockets (16-2, 2-0) and Redettes (3-6, 0-2) meet this week. Both teams will be part of the eight-team Ottumwa Invitational at Evans Gymnasium this weekend.
