North Mahaska, winners of four-straight matches dating back to last weekend’s Chariton Tournament, will host their own weekend tournament on Saturday. Sigourney and Tri-County will be part of the tournament field that will be joining the Warhawks (5-3, 3-1) in New Sharon.

Ottumwa eighth-grade spikers edge Fairfield

OTTUMWA – The Ottumwa eighth-grade volleyball team rallied from an opening-game loss on Thursday night to earn a hard-fought three-game victory at Walsh Gymnasium. The Ottumwa ‘A’ team bounced back from a 21-16 loss in the opener against the Trojans to even the match with a 21-13 win in game two before winning the match in game three, 15-12.

“They really came back strongly after that first game,” Ottumwa eighth-grade volleyball coach Ruth Thomas said. “They just kept pushing. It was really awesome to watch.”

The three-game win over Fairfield came one week after the Ottumwa ‘A’ team swept Mount Pleasant, 21-16 and 21-16, last Thursday. The Ottumwa ‘B’ eighth-grade volleyball squad also beat Fairfield on Thursday, sweeping the Trojans 21-9 and 21-13 after splitting two games with Mount Pleasant last week, winning 21-9 in game one before losing 21-8 in game two.

“We had strong, outstanding serving,” Thomas said of the Ottumwa ‘B’ team’s win against Fairfield on Thursday.

The Ottumwa ‘C’ eighth-grade volleyball team swept Fairfield 21-15 and 21-16, bouncing back from a 21-18, 21-19 loss to Mount Pleasant last week. Ottumwa ‘D’ lost to Fairfield 21-17 and 21-14 after splitting two games with Mount Pleasant last Thursday, winning game one with the Panthers 21-19 before losing game two 21-3.

The Ottumwa eighth-grade volleyball team will return to the court at Walsh Gym to host Oskaloosa next Thursday night.
