Ottumwa wrestlers win a pair of duals; Foster taken to hospital

Courier Staff Writer

BLOOMFIELD — The Ottumwa wrestling team kicked off its season with a pair of dual victories over Cardinal (60-16) and Davis County (52-30) Monday at Davis County High School.

The two victories, however, were overshadowed by a serious incident involving Ottumwa senior Shawn Foster. Foster, who wrestles at 145 pounds, was unable to get up at the conclusion of a round with Davis County’s Kale Baird.

The senior wrestler was eventually taken to Davis County hospital on a stretcher.

“In 17 years of doing this, it was one of the scariest moments I’ve had as a coach,” Kevin Cochran said.

Foster was eventually flown to a hospital in Des Moines. Cochran said he would provide an update as soon as he knew more about Foster’s condition.

While the importance of the dual results seemed trivial compared to Foster’s health, the Bulldogs did dominant in their two duals.

“I think you saw a lot of the kids that worked really hard really stepped up when we needed them big time,” assistant coach Andy Swedenhjelm said. “We wrestled well on our feet.”

Connor Mier turned in a pair of solid performances for Ottumwa, winning both his matches by fall at 220 pounds. Senior Kevin Childs picked up a huge victory by fall over the Mustangs Ben Kincart in the 185 pound class.

“Kevin Childs came up with a big pin that pretty much sealed the meet for us,” Swedenhjelm said.

For Childs, the win was a confidence booster.

“It helps me a lot because it was my second pin ever,” Childs said.

Sophomore Scott Wilson also came up big for Ottumwa, pinning both of his opponents at 152. Ottumwa senior Karsten VanVelsor, the most prolific wrester on last season’s squad; scored a 21-11 major decision victory over Mustang Sam Johnson 21-11 in his only match of the night

In the third dual of the night, the Mustangs handily defeated Cardinal 60-12.

Mustangs coach Jim Nelson said his team still has much to improve on.

“We’re not pieced together yet,” Nelson said. “We’re going to be a lot better by the end of the year. We’ve been practicing hard, so the performance will come eventually.”

Ryan Cale had a terrific couple of duals for Cardinal at 113 pounds. He won a 14-5 major decision over Ottumwa sophomore Nathan Cary and he pinned the Mustangs’ Walker Henderson.

Ottumwa (2-0) will compete at the Burlington Invitational Saturday. Cardinal and Davis County will both be in action at the Pekin Tournament.
