WAUKEE — After almost a month off from competition, the Ottumwa bowling team didn’t exactly ease back into action on Thursday. The Bulldog bowlers battled Waukee, and the Warrior Lanes, in their first meet since competing at Burlington back on Dec. 14.

In the end, it was a winning start to the 2013 portion of the season for the OHS bowlers. The Bulldogs girls won by over 400 pins against the Warriors, finishing with a score of 2,626 to Waukee’s 2,205, while the Ottumwa boys edged Waukee 2,772-2,604.

Head coach Doug Techel talked about the challenges of competing in Waukee.

“It’s a tough place to bowl, but we did okay,” Techel said. “It certainly sets us up to realize we need to keep practicing and keep getting better.”

“We’re all creatures of habit. When you’re used to throwing it in one spot and expect a certain result then it doesn’t happen, you have to add a little more through into your game.”

Lynissa Lasley and Sydney Swallow led the way for the OHS girls (6-0) as each bowler rolled a 181 average. The Ottumwa JV girls, led by Sadie Shaw’s 150 average, also picked up a big win over Waukee with a 2,148-1,576 final score.

The OHS boys (4-2) were led by Anthony Roberts, who finished with a 217 average to help the Bulldogs earn a close 168-pin win. The Bulldog JV boys had the closest win of the night as OHS won by just 79 pins, 2,347-2,268, with Jordan Mitchell’s 157 average leading the way.

“They want to be able to realize that every place they go, they can’t always throw strikes,” Techel said of the Ottumwa boys. “They need to focus on picking up spares. This should make us practice more when we get home.”

The Ottumwa bowlers will finally return home for the first time since an early December CIML Metro dual with Des Moines Lincoln. The Bulldogs will host their next three meets, starting on Monday with a second Metro dual against Des Moines East at Champion Bowl starting at 2:30 p.m.
