Bulldogs girls drop close one

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls basketball team came just a couple baskets away from upsetting CIML Metro foe Des Moines Hoover Tuesday, as the Bulldogs fell to the Huskies 37-33.

“We missed a lot of shots from in close,” Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson said.

Patterson, however, was pleased with many of his players performances despite the loss.

Hayli Beeson, Megan Black and Carissa Hite led the Bulldogs with eight points each. A small factor at the start of the season, Hite has really blossomed in the past couple of games.

“Carissa has worked hard,” Patterson said. “When she gets the ball she has an eye on the rim. She looks to score. It’s nice to see her hard work pay off for her.”

Beeson knocked down a couple of open 3-pointers in the contest but, Patterson said, her biggest play of the night was when she drove to the hoop and scored while drawing a foul in the second half. Although she missed the free-throw, Patterson said the play  sparked his team offensively.

Black played a solid game on both ends of the floor. Aside from her offensive output, she also held the Huskies leading scorer Makayla Larson to only eight points.

Hite hauled in a team-high six rebounds and fellow post player Rachel Zingg corralled five boards and swatted two shots.

“They did a great job battling,” Patterson said.

Olivia Roark dished out a team-high three assists and had a team-best three steals.

Ottumwa (3-12, 2-5) plays host to Indianola Friday.
