CENTERVILLE — The fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Centerville boys basketball team used a big fourth quarter to claim the outright South Central Conference title Friday night with a 66-54 win over Chariton.

The Big Reds led by just two points, 41-39, after three stanzas but used a swarming press to come up with some big turnovers and transition points. Centerville outscored the Chargers 25-15 in the fourth on the way to the 15th straight win for the Big Reds. Logan Dabney led Centerville with 16 points and Kolton Gonnerman added 15.

“It feels really good,” said Centerville coach Matt Kruzich. “Chariton is a nice shooting ball team, and we knew they’d get after us, but we held our composure in a tight ball game.”

Centerville is now 8-0 in the SCC (15-1 overall) with two conference games remaining, but every other team in the conference has at least three losses. Chariton (14-5, 7-3) was led in scoring by Daric Laing’s 16 points, while Christian Bengston added 15 and Bryce Cunningham scored 11.

Payton Busch, Garrett Faris and Michael Starcevich each scored nine points for Centerville. Busch also dished nine assists, while Starceich grabbed seven rebounds. Faris and Busch each came up with four big steals, while Dabney swatted away three block shots.

“We made a living off Dabney in the post,” said Kruzich.

The Big Reds host Kirksville (Mo.) today and will host Albia on Tuesday. Chariton will host Fairfield on Tuesday.
