Top team scores lead OHS bowlers at North

DES MOINES — If the goal for a team is to be performing at your best late in the season, the Ottumwa bowling teams proved they’re right on schedule Monday.

Both the Bulldog boys and girls bowled their best team scores of the year to win a pair of CIML Metro duals with Des Moines North at Merle Hay Lanes. The unbeaten Ottumwa girls rolled past the 3,000-pin barrier, scoring an easy 3,053 to 2,129 win over the Polar Bears, while the Bulldog boys produced their best score of the season in a 3,302-2,659 victory.

Micheala Malloy led the OHS girls in their top performance of the season, rolling a 238 average which was tied for Bulldog boys bowler Anthony Roberts for the second-best Ottumwa individual score on the day. Head coach Doug Techel talked about the Bulldog girls big day scoring that included a big day of baker games.

Our baker games were very good. We only had four open frames,” Techel said after the Bulldogs 11th straight win of the season, nine of which have been in CIML Metro action. “It really comes down to whoever’s hot that day can carry us, which can be any of our girls.

“It’s like the Super Bowl. If you’re peaking at the right time, you’ve got a good chance to be successful.”

The Ottumwa boys had a balanced attack with Jordan Mitchell edging Roberts for the best OHS score, averaging a 241. All five Bulldog boys rolled 200 averages to lead Ottumwa to an 8-3 overall record and an 8-2 Metro mark.

“It was a good team effort. Everyone bowled well,” Bulldog boys head coach Brett Salter said. “I think we’re still day to day, but we had a good day here.”

The Ottumwa bowlers will need to have another good day all around on their home lanes Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs host the CIML Metro 7 Championships at Champion Bowl.

The OHS girls will be looking to complete a perfect Metro run. The Bulldog boys, meanwhile, will have a chance to avenge two of their losses.

“Thursday will be a good test,” Salter said. “It will require us to go out there and have everything together to have enough.”

The Ottumwa junior varsity teams also won on Monday at North. The OHS JV girls won 2,165-1,627, led by Ashley Scchooley’s 158 average, while the Bulldog JV boys got a 181 average from Brett Doug in a 2,496 to 1,802 win over the Polar Bears.
