The effort was there. The defense was there. But the shots, well, the shots just weren’t falling.
This pretty much sums up Ottumwa’s 49-34 loss to Des Moines Roosevelt on senior night Friday.
“If we would have got a couple of those [shots] that rimmed out go in early, I think it’s a different story,” Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson said after the game.
One bright spot that can be gleaned from the loss was the Hayli Beeson continues to shoot well from outside — she knocked down Ottumwa’s only two 3-pointers in the contest.
The game started with a touching moment, as Sammy Garrett, who has been sidelined all year with an injury, started the game and made an unchallenged layup — the Roughriders didn’t try to contest the shot — to start the game. The layup tied the game at 2-2 because the Bulldogs had allowed the Roughriders to score the first bucket so Garrett’s shot wouldn’t give Ottumwa an unfair advantage.
“It was sad to have the last game with Sydney, Sammy and Olivia, but it was nice Sammy got two points in the season and Roosevelt was nice enough to let her have those points,” Bulldog Alexis Winn said.
While Ottumwa applied intense defensive pressure throughout, that didn’t stop Bre Claytor from knocking down five 3-pointers. Her first two treys helped the Roughriders build a 18-5 lead in the first quarter.
Olivia Roark slipped into the lane for layup to in the final seconds of the half to cut Roosevelt’s lead to 28-8.
The Bulldogs best offensive stretch of the contest came in the bottom half of the third quarter. The highlights included a pair of mid-range jumpers by Roark and Sydney Strunk and a transition layup by Megan Black. Still, the Bulldogs were never able to string together enough offense to seriously cut into the Roughriders’ lead.
Sydney Strunk and Beeson led Ottumwa with 6 points each. Claytor led the Roughriders with 15 and Meredith Burkhall added 13.
Patterson had some kind words for his seniors after the game.
“To be able to get Sammy in was nice,” he said. “Olivia and Sydney have played hard all year. It was nice to be able to honor our seniors.”
