OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa boys basketball team grinded out a 70-67 victory over Fairfield in overtime over on senior night Tuesday.

Carter Burns poured in 19 points and corralled 17 rebounds and senior Austin Walker contributed 19 points of his own.

It was a back and forth contest defined by offensive rallies by both teams. Ottumwa shot extremely well — particularly from beyond the arc in the first half — and led 36-26 at the half.

The Bulldogs came out strong to start the second half. Ottumwa’s Andrew Altfillisch snaked inside the lane and scored on a drive amongst the trees to give the Bulldogs a 40-28 lead. But just when it looked like Ottumwa might run away with it, the Trojans came roaring back. They reeled off eight straight points to end the quarter that was capped off by a difficult shot in the lane by Spencer Peterman that tied the game at 43-43.

Walker picked off a pass and pushed it down court for a layup to start the quarter.

His bucket was followed by an 8-0 run courtesy of a Chris Peden bucket off a rebound, a nice drive down the lane by Brok Hopwood and another Walker bucket in transition. Fairfield, however, responded with burst of offense that cut the Bulldogs lead to 51-50. Walker made a turnaround inside the lane that upped Ottumwa’s lead to 53-50 in the games final minutes. Ottumwa led 59-54 in the final minute of regulation before the Trojans Jordan Reid drilled a 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds left. Because of what appeared to be some miscommunication between Burns and Walker, Walker’s inbounds pass was picked off by Darrin Dimmitt who laid it in to tie the game and send the game into overtime.

Burns and Andrew Altfillisch both connected on 3-pointers to help Ottumwa build up a 67-60 lead in overtime. But Fairfield clawed its way back into the game and narrowed the gap to 68-67 after Joseph Hietpas buried a three-pointer. Walker was fouled on the ensuing possession. He sank both his free-throws and Ottumwa picked up the 70-67 victory.

Senior Charlie Altfillisch sparked Ottumwa’s offense in the first half with three 3-pointers.

“Charlie couldn’t miss,” Kyle Keck said.

“It’s nice to get them to finally start falling so you can get in a  rhythm and have some more confidence and you can build on that,” Altfillisch said.

Altfillisch’s second 3-pointer upped Ottumwa’s lead to 17-8. Peterman carried his team offensively in the first half, accounting for 17 of his team’s 26 points. He finished with a game-high 23 points.

Ottumwa had a great night from beyond the arc, as the Bulldogs connected on eight of 16 three pointers. For Keck, Walker, and Charlie Altfillisch, it was a great way to finish on their home court.

Ottumwa (2-18, 1-11) plays its last regular season game Thursday at eighth-ranked Ankeny (Class 4A). Fairfield (4-17) begins Class 3A, District 10 postseason play at Keokuk Monday night at 7 p.m.
