AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Veldhuizen leads Osky over Fairfield

OTTUMWA — The Oskaloosa girls basketball team broke open a defensive battle with a 17-9 third-quarter run on the way to a 44-26 win over Fairfield in non-conference action on Monday.

Senior Kena Veldhuizen led all scorers with 15 points and also led the Indians in rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (6) as Osky improved to 2-0 on the season. Allie Christenson and Peyton Zickefoose each added eight points for the Indians, who will host Des Moines Hoover Friday night.

Fairfield was led in scoring by Sidney Baumann and Marisa Repp, who had 10 points each in the defensive slugfest. Osky led just 12-10 at the half. The Trojans (1-1) are scheduled to host Mount Pleasant in Southeast Conference action Friday night.

Eakins grabs 25 boards in Mustang win

FORT MADISON — Rylee Eakins dominated inside with 22 points and an amazing 25 rebounds as the Davis County girls basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 52-41 win over Holy Trinity Monday.

Kate Birchmier also grabbed 13 rebounds while Shelby Graves had 17 points, five assists and seven steals for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs will travel to Putnam County (Mo.) for action tonight.

Centerville picks up win

FORT MADISON — The Centerville girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season with 40-33 victory over Fort Madison on Monday.

Maddie Lange led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds while Colleen Boyle came up with seven steals as the Redettes improved to 1-1.

Centerville will travel to Osceola to take on Clarke on Thursday.
