OTTUMWA — Cpl. Jonathan E. “Jon” Schiller, 20, of Ottumwa, died Dec. 31, 2006 south of Baqubah, Iraq from wounds sustained when an I.E.D. detonated while he was on combat patrol.

He was born in Des Moines to William and Elizabeth Waddle Schiller and was a 2004 graduate of Ottumwa High School.

Jon was active in youth and high school sports, particularly basketball. He had worked at West Music and Hibbett Sporting Goods before joining the Army. He was part of the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division based in Fort Hood, Texas. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his parents, Bill and Liz Schiller of Ottumwa; two brothers, Charlie and Max Schiller both of Ottumwa; grandparents, Robert and Gwen Schiller of Des Moines; many extended family members and close friends.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Doyle and Gwen Waddle.

Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Monday at the Ottumwa High School Auditorium with Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe, with full military honors conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be directed to Heartland Humane Society Animal Shelter or Wesley United Methodist Church.
