CANTRIL— Jerry W. Smith, 73, of Cantril died at 5:10 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born Dec. 22, 1932 near Cantril to Raymond M. and Charlotte Kisling Smith. He married Karol Dillon. They divorced. He married Maxine Hughes Mairet Feb. 23, 1956 in Cantril.

He graduated from Cantril High School, served in the U.S. Army during the Koren conflict, spent his active life farming and stock raising near Cantril and retired to town in 1999. He was weighmaster at Keosauqua Sales Barn for 27 years, was a licensed realtor, was a member of Cantril United Methodist Church and had served on various church boards, was a 50-year Mason in Keosauqua Lodge No. 10, served 17 years on the Van Buren County Board of Review, a number of years as Des Moines Township Clerk, and was a member of Cantril Improvement Association and former Cantril Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Douglas Smith and wife, Leah of Winwick, England and R.L. Smith and wife, Dynnette of Cantril, three daughters, Judi Davis and husband, Don, of Mesa, AZ, Sherri VanLaningham of Milton, and Kathi Huff and husband, Don, of Cantril, 15 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a sister, Joni Maxwell and husband, Duane, of Mt. Pleasant, a brother, Martin Smith and wife, Kathy, of Minocqua, WI, his step-father, George Kyl of Bloomfield, other relatives and many friends. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday March 20, 2006, in Cantril United Methodist Church, Rev. Paul Rekward officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with family present 3-5 and 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Cantril United Methodist Church, Maple Grove Cemetery or Cantril Waubonsie park may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 157, Cantril, IA 52542.
