OTTUMWA — Nomination papers for this year’s city council elections are available, and candidates can begin filing later this month.
Two positions are up for election this year. Seats on the city council are four-year terms, and the candidates elected in November will officially take office Jan. 2, 2020.
Residents of Ottumwa can pick up the candidate’s guide, nomination papers and an affidavit of candidacy from the city clerk’s office, 105 E. Third St., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The forms are also available online a the Iowa Secretary of State’s website. The affidavit must be signed before a notary.
Candidates are required to collect at least 37 signatures from eligible voters, though those who sign need not be registered. Petitions must include the signatory’s place of residence and the date they signed.
Candidates may formally file for the election beginning Monday, Aug. 12. If a primary is needed, it will take place Oct. 8. The election is Nov. 5.
