SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A man twice convicted in Wapello County for abusing children has died in a South Dakota prison.

Brandon Theodore James, a former Ottumwa resident, died last week after an illness, according to the South Dakota Department of Corrections. His death was reported by the Pierre Capital Journal.

Authorities in southeast Iowa asked residents to keep an eye open for James when he was being sought by authorities in Sioux Falls. He was featured in a segment on “America’s Most Wanted” in July 2006, and investigators believed he might have returned to the Ottumwa area.

James was convicted in Wapello County of lascivious acts with a child and third-degree sexual abuse in 1994. James was captured after the television segment aired and was sentenced in 2007 to nearly 60 years in prison.

Authorities said during the “America’s Most Wanted” profile that James was known to join churches in rural areas in order to meet underage boys he would later abuse.
