OTTUMWA — Jefferson Street is open again after several months of reconstruction. The viaduct, though, will soon close for winter maintenance.
Work on the road began in June. This was not an overlay to smooth things out for drivers, but instead was a full-depth reconstruction of the section from Sixth Street to Gara Street. It took care of serious pothole issues, but also connected to the city’s ongoing sewer separation project.
Reopening comes about two months later than planned. The city initially expected work to take until the end of August.
Closure of the Jefferson Street Viaduct will not take nearly as long. The span will close at 9 a.m. Monday for fall maintenance. Drivers will need to find alternative routes, but the viaduct should be reopened by 8 a.m. Tuesday.
