ELDON —Jordan Johnson, a student athlete at Cardinal High School died July 7 after collapsing prior to baseball practice at the school.

As the Cardinal baseball team gathered for practice, "Jordan reported to other players that he felt hot and collapsed to the ground, Cardinal Superintendent Arnie Snook told the Courier Tuesday.

He said that CPR was administered and the teen was transported by ambulance to Ottumwa Regional Hospital. Snook said that Johnson died of heart failure.

"All in the Cardinal Community School District were shocked and deeply saddened by the death," Snook said. "It is hard for all of us, staff and students, to realize that the classrooms, halls and athletic fields of Cardinal High School will not be blessed with Jordan’s pleasant, smiling, caring and love of life attitude when school begins in August. Jordan’s death has had a profound impact on everyone who knew him."

The school library was opened Monday night for team members, students and adults to gather. Crisis counselors also were available Tuesday morning at the high school.

Johnson would have been a junior year this fall at Cardinal. He participated on the varsity level in football, basketball and baseball and was a member of the Future Farmers of America.

In a press release, Snook said that visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdat at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cardinal football field complex north of Eldon.
