OTTUMWA — Wapello County Board of Supervisors have some changes ahead of them at the Supervisors meeting, but one major change in particular is deciding whether to approve of the Genealogy Society’s desire to relocate from their location on the second floor of the Ottumwa Amtrak Station in Wapello County Historical Museum.
Genealogy Newsletter Editor Bill Hanson said the location was courtesy of the Wapello County Historical Society. Five years ago, the Historical Society decided to charge rent. The Genealogy Society was able to make ends meet until the Historical Society raised rent by 140 percent.
Hanson is hoping the Genealogy Society can get approval from the Board of Supervisors to relocate because they must move by the end of the year.
The Genealogy Society has an idea for a new location.
“Ideally under great circumstances. We would like to become part of a public building. Right now, we’re one of the few genealogy societies in Iowa that’s housed privately because the Amtrak Station, because it's owned by the Historical Society. It’s a private building, but most of them are part of public buildings such as libraries or city halls," Hanson said.
