The collection center for household hazardous waste is open again. Located at the Ottumwa/Wapello Recycling Center, it offers the opportunity for residents of Wapello and Davis counties to safely dispose of chemicals or other household items that don’t belong in the landfill.
The center collects waste only by appointment, so people need to call ahead. Materials marked “danger,” “warning,” “caution,” or “poison,” are considered household hazardous waste and are eligible for disposal at the center. Common items include gasoline or diesel additives, paints, solvents, stain removers and pesticides.
When people drop off the waste, they are asked to pull up to the collection site, remain in their vehicle and let staff who are trained in handling potentially volatile materials dispose of the items.
To make an appointment, call (641) 683-0685. The center is at 2415 Emma Street off of Highway 34.
