Cornfield crash

OTTUMWA — A Brooklyn, Iowa, man was taken to the hospital after losing control of his vehicle and landing in a cornfield around noon Monday.

Members of the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department said Lee Bennishek, 61, was southbound toward Ottumwa on Highway 149 when he drifted over the centerline, over corrected, ramped up an embankment and landed several feet into a cornfield, flattening the cornstalks in his path. They said two passersby noticed the accident and gave aid until emergency personnel arrived.

Bennishek, the only occupant of the vehicle, was able to walk out of the cornfield and was coherent after the accident. He was taken by ambulance to Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

Wapello County Rural Fire and ORMICS were also at the scene, and citations are likely in the crash.
