OTTUMWA — Emergency responders closed Highway 63 south of Ottumwa, near 60th Street, Tuesday morning after a major crash.
The collision involved a semi and another vehicle. At least one person was trapped, and it took nearly an hour to get the person out of the vehicle. Multiple responders from local law enforcement, medical personnel and the Wapello Rural Fire Department responded.
The crash happened as a strong thunderstorm moved into Wapello County. Heavy rain and frequent lightning complicated the situation as traffic backed up on both sides of the highway.
One person was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
