OSKALOOSA — Looking for the best burger in Iowa?
It can be found in Oskaloosa at the Wood Iron Grille.
According to a news release from the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Wood Iron Grille was selected as officially having the best burgers in Iowa.
This is the 10th year for the Best Burger competition, according to a news release. The designation comes after a two-phase competition. The first phase is based on votes from the public. The ten restaurants with the most votes are named the top 10. From there, anonymous judges visit each restaurant and focus on the burger patties and give a score based on taste, doneness and presentation.
Wood Iron Grille owners Michael Glesener and Matthew Gunn were excited about the journey. Their establishment has been open for just seven months and has already received a top accolade.
The announcement was made May 1 and Gunn said he hasn’t stopped dancing.
“I’m super excited,” he said. “I’m dancing from the inside out; my body just won’t stop shaking. Pretty amazing.”
Gunn said he and Glesener got a heads up about their win but were not allowed to tell anybody, and they were just about bursting from the seams.
“They kind of fair warned us just to give us a ‘hey, your life is about to change,’” he said. “Kind of one of those things you’ve got to keep quiet for a little bit but now we can shout it from the rooftops.”
Gunn said Wood Iron Grille wanted to bring something awesome to Oskaloosa.
“Oskaloosa – to us – is home,” he said. “So we wanted to bring something big city to Oskaloosa because we like going out and eating good things.”
That’s not to say there aren’t good things to eat in Oskaloosa, Gunn said.
“We have great competitors out there like Wanderlunch, Grate Expectations, Brickhouse, Tasos – those are all great places to eat,” he said. “We just wanted to bring more to Oskaloosa.”
The team, Gunn said, is what makes the hamburgers so special.
“Our team is amazing,” he said. “Just everyone from the dishwashers to the cooks to the front of the house. Just the love that we put into our food, I think, would make the best burger.”
According to the news release, the Wood Iron Grille menu has three versions of its 6-ounce burger.
“The Wood Iron Original Burger features applewood smoked bacon, a sweet and tangy onion jalapeno jam and smoked cheddar cheese. The Cajun Black and Blue Burger is topped with applewood smoked blue cheese and Cajun seasoning. The ‘Merica Burger is a classic with American cheese, lettuce,
Gunn said the plan is to keep bringing amazing things to Oskaloosa.
“Living the dream,” he said.
