OTTUMWA — The Wapello County Foundation is hosting a dinner to announce 2019 grant recipients next month.
The dinner is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at Bridge View Center.
The foundation was formed in 1981 through the vision of Ottumwa resident Paul Strother. Following his death in 1983, the foundation was funded by his estate, and the income from the foundation was to be used for grants to nonprofit organizations and governmental bodies. Its general purpose is to improve the quality of life for Wapello County residents.
In 2005, the foundation became associated with the Iowa County Endowment Fund Program, which redistributes a percentage of Iowa’s commercial casino gaming tax revenues. The yearly sum is directed to the foundation and redistributed to local nonprofits with a percentage allocated back to the percent endowment fund.
Since the first grants in 1988, more than $3 million has been distributed to more than 100 recipients. Current board members include Chuck Kiple, president; Gary Yates, vice president; Dianne Haas, secretary, treasurer; Mark Altfillisch; Nancy Menke; Bill Reece; Josh Van Ness; Andrew Woodard; Lori Yates; and Paul Zingg.
